President update

Happy winter season to all! For those who were not able to attend our annual Conference in Homer this year, I would like to provide a brief summary of 2017 for AIA Alaska:

We are stepping up our presence in advocacy at the local level. This is led in large part by our Chapter's State Government Network (SGN) Representative. I would like to heartily thank and acknowledge Catherine Fritz for her long-time service as AIA Alaska's Representative, as well as welcome Paul Baril who will stepping into this role moving forward. Make note of the dates for the 2018 APDC Legislative Fly-In, February 7-8, and let Paul know if you plan to attend. The approved 2018 Chapter budget includes funding to cover travel for our SGN Representative to attend this fly-in. SB-87 is slated to be a fly-in agenda topic.

AIA National has changed the structure of Grassroots. Previously always held in Washington DC and combined with a visit to our legislators, the new structure separates out the Hill visit every other year. In 2018, Grassroots will be held in San Diego as more of a leadership training event. The 2018 approved budget and travel matrix have aligned Executive Director travel to ensure ED participation at Grassroots during years it is held in DC, and at CACE in alternate years.

For those of you who have been contacted by ASID regarding possible licensure of Interior Designers in Alaska, be aware that there is an AIA National policy addressing this issue . Page 6 of the document, item 3). Therefore, AIA Alaska as a Chapter cannot support ASID in this effort. The 2018 annual conference will be held in Southeast; Exact location and dates to be determined but plan to attend!

Your incoming 2018 AIA Alaska Board:

Past-President

2nd Year Director
Tim Whitely
1st Year Director Erin Gerondale

Southeast Section Chair Zane Jones

There is more work to be done and the incoming 2018 Board is well positioned to take it on. I encourage all of you to get involved with the Chapter, our Committees and your local Section to help make the most impact.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as President during 2017, and I wish everyone a prosperous 2018!

~ Sarah Salazar, AIA President (2017)
